Groundbreaking marks new Child Development Center at JBSA-Lackland

Leaders from the 502nd Air Base Wing and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers gathered September 29 to break ground on a new Child Development Center at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, marking the beginning of a project designed to provide modern childcare facilities for military families.

The new center represents an investment in the quality of life for JBSA families while supporting the installation’s broader mission of developing and sustaining mission-ready Airmen and Guardians.

”Great partnerships are about more than delivering projects—they’re about building places where people can live, work, grow, and feel at home,” said Travis Hightower, the project engineer for the CDC with Fort Worth District’s South Texas Area Office.

The facility will provide purpose-built spaces designed to support the developmental needs of children while giving parents greater access to reliable, high-quality childcare close to where they work.

Child development centers are an important part of the support infrastructure at JBSA. The 502nd Air Base Wing, as the host wing for Joint Base San Antonio, provides installation support and services to military members, families and mission partners across the joint base.

The project also highlights the partnership between JBSA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, which supports military construction and infrastructure projects throughout Texas and Louisiana.

“We’re proud to work alongside JBSA, then Air Force Civil Engineer Center and our community partners to deliver quality construction and infrastructure that supports the mission and, most importantly, the families who call this community home,” said Hightower. “This project is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the everyday lives of service members and their families, and that’s what makes this project so important.”

Construction of the new center is expected to provide modern, efficient spaces that can better meet the needs of children, caregivers and families who rely on JBSA childcare services.

As construction gets underway, the groundbreaking represents more than the start of a new building. It is a long-term investment in the families who live and work at JBSA-Lackland and the people who support the installation’s critical missions every day.
